? How to Use the Financial Model

📊 Getting Started

This financial model helps you explore your dairy farm's profitability by changing values to determine the effect on then bottom line. The model is based on typical values unless you change values to mirror your own. The model is divided into three main sections:

  • Output: Income from milk, calves, and culls
  • Variable Costs: Costs that vary with herd size (feed, vet, AI, etc.)
  • Fixed Costs: Costs that don't vary directly with herd size (labour, rent, machinery)

✏️ Editing Values

Click on any white input field to enter your farm's specific data. The model will automatically recalculate all metrics as you type.

💡 Tip: Your changes are automatically calculated. Use the settings panel (⚙️) to save your values for future sessions.

🔒 Manual Override

Some rows have lock checkboxes next to them:

  • Unchecked (🔓): Value is auto-calculated from other inputs
  • Checked (🔒): You can enter your own total manually

This is useful when you want to override calculated values with your actual figures.

⚙️ Settings Panel

Click the settings gear (⚙️) in the top right to:

  • Save Current Values: Store your current inputs in your browser
  • Reset to Defaults: Return all values to industry standards
  • Export PDF: Generate a complete financial report
  • Generate Chart: Create a visual waterfall chart of your P&L
  • Customize Defaults: Admins can change the default starting values

📈 Understanding the Results

The model calculates four key columns for each cost/income item:

  • Total (£): The total amount for your whole herd
  • Per Cow (£): Cost or income divided by herd size
  • PPL (p): Pence per litre of milk produced
  • % Margin: Percentage of milk income
💡 Key Metric: The Margin per cow at the bottom shows your profit (or loss) per cow. A positive number means profit!

🎯 Best Practices

  • Start with accurate Herd Size and Yield per Cow
  • Update Milk Price regularly to reflect current contracts
  • Use actual figures from your accounts where possible
  • Review Variable Costs - these directly impact per-cow profitability
  • Check Fixed Costs annually as they can creep up over time
  • Export reports regularly to track changes over time
